How to Be a Magnet



So how do you access the magnetic quality that is part of your True Self? Your True Self is the embodiment of all the high-vibration emotions. You attract the good things in life through positive, high-vibration emotions like love, joy, kindness, peace, and gratitude. On the flip side, you repel what you want through negative, low-vibration emotions like anger, envy, jealousy, hate, fear, and chronic sadness.

You might say you want an exciting new job, but if the energy you are putting out into the world is sluggish, it can block your dream career from manifesting in your life. Negative, depressed energy repels what you want and in turn can inadvertently draw to you all the people, situations, and things that you don’t want. Case in point: let’s say you want to create a successful business. If you are critical and judgmental of others, your energy literally pushes people away—good managers, staff, and customers. Lower-vibration emotions create energy patterns in your life that keep you small and limited. Like tends to go to like. As Yogananda says, “Those whose thoughts are inharmonious will always find inharmony.”

Now I know what you may be thinking. The terms high vibration and low vibration might remind you of your woo woo–loving friend who always tells you she is sending you “good vibes.” Yet there is supportive science that suggests that vibrations play a fundamental role in our lives. Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, have developed a “resonance theory of consciousness,” with is based on data from the fields of neuroscience, biology, and physics. This theory suggests that resonance—which is another word for “being in sync”—is at the heart of not only human consciousness but of physical reality in general.

In science the phenomenon of “spontaneous self- organization” refers to when frequencies start synchronizing. In his book Sync: How Order Emerges from Chaos in the Universe, Nature, and Daily Life, Steven Strogatz provides various examples from physics, biology, chemistry, and neuroscience to illustrate what he calls “sync” (synchrony), where frequencies start matching up. One example is how large gatherings of fireflies of certain species start flashing in sync with one another (it reminds me of flash mobs—groups of diverse people coming together in a public place to dance to something fun, like a Prince song).

Research from the HeartMath Institute, which is based on different physiological tests such as EEG (brain waves), SCL (skin conductance), ECG (heart), BP (blood pressure), hormone levels, and heart rate variability, has found that stressful or depleting emotions such as frustration and overwhelm lead to disorder that is reflected throughout virtually all bodily systems.

So how does this relate to personal magnetism? Well, emotions have frequencies. You can tune in to how certain emotions feel to you in your own body. You’ll find that when you are experiencing states of love and joy, you feel “lighter,” which is indicative of a higher vibration. When you feel negative emotions, let’s say anger or hate, those feelings in your body will feel quite dense, which are indicative of lower vibrations. The work of David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., the psychiatrist we mentioned in Chapter 12, attempts to apply measurable scientific analysis to our emotions.

Hawkins developed what he called the “Scale of Consciousness,” which uses a muscle-testing technique called Applied Kinesiology. Essentially, this alternative medicine practice measures your body’s response to emotions and gives each emotion a number on a scale. Peace, joy, and love rank highest, while fear, apathy, guilt, and shame fall in the gutter. Happiness and fulfillment happen when we are living primarily with the emotions on the highest end of the scale.

Now, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever feel those low or negative emotions. As humans, we are meant to experience ups and downs, but you want to find a balance, and we do this by feeling our emotions, processing them, and then letting them go. It’s like healthy emotional digestion.

Research supports Hawkins’s work, and that coherent states of being, characterized by joy, peace, compassion, and gratitude, support the brain and nervous system’s ability to function properly and positively influence your perceptions, emotions, intuition, and health. In other words, when your body and brain work better and more cohesively, you feel better and you perform better.

According to the HeartMath Institute, the way to have more sustained periods of coherence is by “actively self-generating positive emotions.” And the way to generate more joy and peace and compassion in an authentic, sustainable way is through a consistent meditation practice! So you can see how all of this starts to go together.

You may be used to wondering, “Why are you so happy today?” when you see a really happy person. “Maybe they just won the lottery or they just got engaged,” you tell yourself. We’re so conditioned to think that happy, joyful energy results from something outside of oneself. But “self-generated” high-vibration emotions really come from inside of you. And instead of relying on a new purse or a compliment or a raise at work to generate those emotions within you, you start to realize that you can generate them with nothing else besides yourself! And following your meditation techniques, that is.

I offer some exercises here to help you to energize your magnetic capabilities.



Magnetism Manifestation Practice



You can do this practice before going into a situation where you want to be particularly magnetic. It could be a party, a meeting, a dinner date, an interview, or whatever. This will help put you into the highest possible vibrational state, so that you can exude that powerful force that will help you attract what you want in your life. It takes as little as a few minutes, yet it is a powerful tool in your toolbox . I often do this practice before recording podcasts.

1. To start, shake out your hands, your body, and/or your head a few times . Imagine that you are shaking off any negative thoughts, negative energy, the heaviness of the day, or anything that might have happened earlier that annoyed or worried you.

2. Next, close your eyes and take some deep breaths, for a few moments at least. As you watch the breath, notice how it starts to slow down.

3. Now, put all your attention on your heart. Focus on three words: Love, Peace, Joy. Feel these emotions in your heart. Use your will, as Yogananda teaches us, to direct energy into your heart, and self-generate these emotions until you actually feel their presence. You might feel disconnected from these emotions in your own life. If so, think of a scene in a happy (even if it’s cheesy) movie where the characters embodied these emotions, and work with that. Once you call those emotions into your heart, imagine they are spreading out from your heart in all directions, to all the cells of your body, like a dam that bursts open and allows the river to flow freely. Feel the warmth of these emotions as they saturate you. I like to imagine it as a warm white light.

4. Once you feel completely saturated in these high-vibration emotions, close your hands in prayer, bring them to your chest, and take a moment for gratitude. Acknowledge the good in your life, and anything specific that comes up for you. Gratitude is a high-vibration state, so it will also amplify your magnetism. Okay, now you’re ready! Go for it. Now you’re in your highest vibe state to rock it (whatever it is that you want to rock)
