Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga

"Any reason for practicing yoga is a good reason. Enhancing flexibility and releasing stress are as noble a purpose for performing yoga as the awakening of spirituality. This is the great gift of yoga it serves and nourishes us at every level of our being and spontaneously contributes to greater well being in all domains of life. Yoga will help you discover gifts within yourself that have remained unopened since your childhood gifts of peace, harmony, laughter, and love."

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga
by Drs. Deepak Chopra & David Simon

The Sanskrit word yoga means union - union of environment, the senses, body, mind, and soul. This union is described in an ancient text known as the Yoga Sutras, written by the sage Patanjali who explains that yoga is the progressive settling down of the mind in the field of pure silence, which is usually overshadowed by the activity of the mind.

Yoga for Every Body

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga integrates 5,000-year-old Vedic wisdom and the yogic interpretations of Drs. Chopra and Simon. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga is a consciousness-based hatha yoga program infused with teachings from Dr. Chopra's classic bestseller The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. Hatha Yoga is the study of the asanas or postures based on Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga. Our program offers a balanced approach that can be taken more deeply or gently, depending on the needs of the individual. We guide students to experience body-centered restful awareness, which in turn helps each student find the perfect way to do the postures.

The Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California, provides yoga instruction seven days a week and offers its world-renowned Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga teacher certification program twice each year. We also include morning and evening yoga instruction in all of our programs, seminars, workshops, and retreats.

Do I need a reservation or can I just show up for class?
No reservation is necessary, you can just show up. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before class to allow ample time to park, check in with the instructor, ask questions, prepare for class, and relax on your mat. If you didn‘t have time to check in with the instructor before class, make sure to see the instructor after class.

What should I wear? Do I need a mat?
Wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move and stretch in. No special footgear is required because you will be barefoot. Bring your own yoga mat. If you forget your mat, there may be extra yoga mats that you can use or you can buy one at our store.

Can I do yoga even if I’m not flexible?
Yes, you don’t have to be flexible to start your yoga practice. In the beginning, only go as far as it feels comfortable. As you continue to practice, you will notice your flexibility increasing. Increased flexibility is one of the benefits of yoga.

I’m new to yoga. Where do I begin?
If you are new to yoga, start with the All Levels class. This class will help you improve your flexibility, balance, muscle tone, and endurance. For students with a regular practice, we recommend the All Levels or Level II class. If you have limited mobility or want to learn new ways to physically move at work or while traveling, you will enjoy the Chair Yoga class. If you have children, the Family Yoga class is a fun alternative.

What are the physical benefits of doing yoga?
Yoga offers a huge array of benefits including, improved blood circulation, more oxygen to the body, stress reduction, increased strength and flexibility, improved sleeping patterns, and toning of the digestive and endocrine systems.

Can I eat before class?
It’s recommended to refrain from eating two to three hours before class so your digestion is complete before class begins. This will help you have comfortable yoga practice. If you have a very active digestive system, a light snack such as a few nuts or a partial granola bar might be tolerated 30 minutes to an hour before class.

What does Yoga mean?
Yoga is a philosophy, a science and a way of life. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ which means “to unite.” Yoga is the “union” of mind, body, and spirit. When your physical, intellectual, and spiritual selves are working in union, your life becomes balanced. The practice of yoga enables you to achieve calmness, clarity, a sense of well-being, enthusiasm towards life, and peace of mind.

What does 'Namasté' mean?
Yoga instructors usually end class with the traditional "Namasté" (NAH-mah-stay). Namasté is a Sanskrit word that is translated literally as “I bow to you.” It is more commonly translated as “the divine light in me honors the divine light in you.” It’s a gesture of respect and honoring.

What does Om mean?
‘Om’ is a mantra often chanted during yoga classes for its vibrational quality. It is the universal sound, which represents the collective sound of all the vibrations in the universe.
