This is a profoundly relaxing Ayurvedic treatment in which a soothing stream of warm herbalized oil is poured over the forehead, or "third eye." It was developed by vaidyas (practitioners of Ayurveda) in India for use in restorative therapy and is one of the steps involved in panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words "shiras" (head) and "dhara" (flow). Shirodhara is used in a variety of conditions including allergies, concentration problems, headaches and insomnia, and to gently calm the central nervous system.
