How Can I Serve?

Welcome back! In our final week of the Discover Your Passion and Purpose series, we are focusing on the power of giving and serving . . . using our unique gifts to serve others. The Law of Dharma states that for every special talent, the world has a unique need that can only be filled by the expression of that talent. As our self-awareness deepens and we discover our gifts, we can share them with the world. And as we give to the world, we experience the expansion of happiness and fulfillment in our own lives.


You Are the Gift


On the path of purpose and passion, always remember that your greatest gift and contribution to the world is your own true self. The more you awaken to your essential nature, which is pure love, pure spirit, and pure joy, the more you radiate the light to others, inspiring others to tap into their own infinite source of wellbeing.

When you’re living in a state of expanded consciousness, your simple presence is a gift because at the level of consciousness or spirit, we are all inextricably connected to everyone and everything.  While our body may appear to be a solid physical structure, in reality it is an ever-flowing river of energy and information, in constant dynamic exchange with the environment around us. 

When we walk into a room, our energy emanates before us. Without saying a word, we communicate through our energetic signature, creating a ripple that can affect everyone we meet. If our state of being is centered in love and compassion, we communicate that energy to each other. Through our energy or consciousness, we have an unlimited capacity to send out ripples that will help the planet and its inhabitants move in the most evolutionary direction – from fear, hostility, and unrest to love, compassion, and peace.

As you expand your self-awareness, here are suggestions that will help you consciously participate in the dynamic flow of giving and receiving.

  • Give daily
    Giving needn’t be reserved for birthdays and other special occasions. We have countless opportunities every day to give. Whenever you meet someone in your daily travels, offer a gift. This may be a compliment, a flower, a prayer, or a genuine smile. The best gift you can give is to leave someone feeling a little lighter than they felt did before your interaction. Silently wish everyone you encounter happiness.
  • Give freely
    When we give from the limitless joy and abundance of our heart, we increase the circulation of abundance and love in our lives. If we feel diminished when we give or we give grudgingly, then the gift is not truly given. Anything that is of value in life only multiplies when it is given. The monetary value of the gift doesn’t matter; it is the intention behind your giving and receiving that is the most important thing.
  • Receive gratefully
    Every act of receiving is an act of giving. When you happily accept a gift, you give pleasure to the giver. Think about giving something to someone you love. Imagine the happiness and opening that unfolds as a result of your gift. Now imagine that your friend or loved one refused your offering. You would most likely feel disappointed, sad, and empty. Therefore, gratefully receive all the gifts life has to offer: nature, sunlight, food, and friends. Be open to receiving gifts from others, whether it is a material gift, a compliment, or a kind gesture.
  • Replenish Your Well
    The Law of Giving and Receiving presupposes that we have something to give. Giving is based upon being, for we can only give of what we have . . . what we are. Spiritually speaking, this means we must go within to tap our infinite reservoir of inner intelligence, power, and joy. Let all your activities be aimed at bringing you into alignment with your essential being. Give yourself the gifts of daily meditation; restful sleep; a healthy, balanced diet; regular exercise; loving relationships; laughter; and play. Celebrate the body that allows your soul to express its meaning and purpose in life.

Discover Your Inner Peace with Yoga

Like meditation, yoga is a powerful practice for connecting to your essential nature as you cultivate the union of body, mind, and spirit.  Yoga encompasses ancient teachings for self-awareness as well as physical postures for awakening to your true self.

Enjoy this guided yoga practice led by Chopra Center master educator Libby Carstensen. As you practice, let go of any expectations of what “should” happen during yoga and settle into the experience with a sense of self-compassion and acceptance.


Exercise: The Path of Gratitude

Experiencing gratitude is one of the most effective ways of getting in touch with your soul’s purpose.  When you’re in touch with your soul, you eavesdrop on the thoughts of the universe. You feel connected to everything in creation. You embrace the wisdom of uncertainty and you sense yourself as a field of infinite possibilities. 

Just for a few moments, consider the things you have in your life that you could be grateful for – all the nurturing relationships, the material comforts, your body, and the mind that allows you to really understand yourself and everything around you. Just breathe and be grateful for the air that is filling your lungs and making your life possible. Feel your body and your aliveness and acknowledge what a gift it is to be alive right now. Allow your awareness to appreciate what you are seeing, smelling, and touching just at this moment and you will find yourself in the middle of the stream of life without trying at all.

Feel the love, compassion, and understanding that gratitude brings into your heart. Notice how gratitude brings your attention into the present time, which is the moment in which miracles can unfold. The deeper your appreciation, the more you see with the eyes of the soul and the more your life flows in harmony with the creative power of the universe
