Primordial Sound Meditation is a healing practice that allows us to experience inner calm and deep relaxation. For thousands of years, people have used meditation to move beyond the mind's busy activity and emotional turbulence into profound peace and expanded awareness.

In the 21st century, the restful awareness we experience during meditation is more valuable than ever. The pace of life has accelerated, and every day we are bombarded with more information and stimulation than our ancestors encountered during entire lifetimes. Not surprisingly, the number of people suffering from stress, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic health problems is on the rise – and many are searching for peace of mind.

The most direct way to experience inner silence and well-being is meditation. As scientific research reveals, when you meditate, your breathing slows, blood pressure decreases, and stress hormone levels fall.

Primordial Sound Meditation isn't about forcing your mind to be quiet, but about experiencing the quiet that is already there. Even when your mind is filled with agitated thoughts, you still have access to the inner stillness and calm that always lies beneath the choppy surface of thought and emotion.

Even as your body is resting deeply in meditation, your mind is awake though quiet.  The term "restful awareness" captures the unique combination of physical relaxation and an alert yet quiet mind.

Primordial Sounds and Mantras

At the Chopra Center we offer instruction in Primordial Sound Meditation, a powerful meditation technique rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. Chopra Center co-founders Deepak Chopra and David Simon have revived this ancient practice of sound meditation and made it available in a format that is easy to learn.

When you learn Primordial Sound Meditation, you will receive a personal mantra. A mantra is a specific sound or vibration, which when repeated silently, helps you to enter deeper levels of awareness. A Sanskrit term that translates as "vehicle of the mind", a mantra truly is a vehicle that takes you into quieter, more peaceful levels of the mind.

The mantra you will receive is the vibration the universe was creating at the time and place of your birth, and it is calculated following Vedic mathematic formulas. When you silently repeat your mantra in meditation, it creates a vibration that helps you slip into the space between your thoughts, into the complete silence that is sometimes referred to as "the gap." Your mind is no longer caught up in its noisy internal chatter and is instead exposed to its own deepest nature: pure awareness.

As many studies show, a regular meditation practice offers numerous health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, strengthening the immune system, and releasing stress and fatigue. In fact, meditating for half an hour provides more psychological rest than a full night's sleep. As you meditate on a regular basis, you will notice an increased sense of wellbeing as well as greater energy and creativity.

Join us at the Chopra Center to learn the powerful practice of Primordial Sound Meditation. We teach the technique at the Seduction of Spirit meditation and yoga retreat, the Journey Into Healing workshop, our Perfect Health six-day program, Meditation Weekend, and other programs. What is meditation?

Meditation is a tool for the re-discovery of body's own inner intelligence. Practiced for thousands of years, it's not about forcing the mind to be quiet, it's finding the silence that's already there and making it a part of your life. Silence is the birthplace of happiness, creativity and infinite possibilities. From this field of pure potentiality we get our bursts of inspiration, our most intuitive thoughts, and our deepest sense of connection to the Universe. Practicing meditation on a daily basis allows you to weave silence and stillness into your mind and body to create a life of greater compassion and fulfillment. Meditation is a journey to the center of our very being; a journey to emotional freedom; and a journey to the reawakening of our unconditioned self.

"Thank you for teaching me how to meditate. I have made it every day a part of my being. I thought 30 minutes was going to be impossible with a 3- and a 6-year-old, but it's no problem at all. I have set my biological alarm clock in my head to get up at 5:45 each morning. I rise, pee, splash water on my face, blow my nose, light Sattwa incense and dive in. Surprisingly, I meditate for an average of 40-50 minutes. I love it! The evening sessions are done with the whole family. All four of us sit together on the couch and I lead the meditation for anywhere from 3-5 minutes. It's so great my kids are asking to do it every night before we put them to bed! Thank you, thank you. I hope you are well and I look forward to seeing you again."
~Dave, Coral Gables, Florida

"Since taking PSM I have been mediating twice a day every day for three weeks now. I have found the evening meditation challenging because of my schedule and I did miss one night. That said, it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am thrilled that I spent the time there with you and I most likely will be booking another retreat this month. The changes I have noticed is I am sleeping much better. I am a much calmer person, happier and enthusiastic. I am looking forward to more changes. Thanks for everything. I hope to see you again soon."
~Regina, 51, Flintridge, California

"Bravo! Mind expanding and heart healing! This has deepened my meditation and I now meditate daily, an hour in the morning and a half hour in the evening."
~Carol, 49, Rhode Island

"It was thrilling to receive my mantra, which I truly felt reflected me."
~Susan, 56, Chicago, Illinois

"I've never attended any meditation classes before, and I'm so fortunate to have found this class. Thank you for teaching me how to meditate deeply. It has totally helped me change my attitude and really release stress."
~Naoko, 36, Burbank, California

"Awesome instructors, and a very centering meditation practice. I find myself in spontaneous states of happiness throughout my day because of it."
~Shelli, Thornton, Colorado
