Healing Power of Massage
I’ve heard that massage can help activate the body’s healing power and strengthen the immune system. Is this true? If so, how does this work, and what type of massage do you suggest?
Massage is an important technique for awakening the inner pharmacy. When you feel relaxed, comfortable, or invigorated during a massage, it is because your body is increasing its production of natural relaxing, pain-relieving, or energizing chemicals. Massage has been a component of traditional healing systems for millennia. Recently, scientific studies have been able to confirm the therapeutic value of massage in a variety of settings.
A recent study from the University of Miami found that pregnant women receiving massages have significantly reduced levels of anxiety and depression. Children with HIV infection receiving massages show measurable improvements in their immune function. Massage has been shown to help ease chronic pain, reduce fatigue, and relieve insomnia. It can help premature babies gain weight faster and help air traffic controllers lower their blood pressure.
The overriding principle is that human beings respond positively to being touched. Although we primarily use ayurvedic principles in our massage treatments, any massage that induces feelings of relaxation and comfort is beneficial to your mind and body.
With love,
David
