Swine Flu and the Collective Consequences of our Choices

Question:

What do you think about the outbreak of swine flu and what can we do to avoid getting sick?

Answer:

The outbreak of swine flu reminds us of our interdependence with all the sentient beings with whom we share the planet. Although our senses try to tell us otherwise, there is no distinct boundary between our personal body and the extended body of our environment, which are in constant, dynamic exchange. As information is emerging that this virus is likely to have originated from an area where factory pig farming is prevalent, we’re reminded that our personal and collective choices have consequences.

This is a good time to recommit to your own healthy lifestyle, ensuring that you are getting enough rest, eating healthy life-supporting foods, and engaging in practices that reduce the harmful effects of stress on the immune system. To further strengthen your immunity, you might also want to consider ingesting one or more of the Ayurvedic rejuvenating herbs, including amalaki, ashwaghanda, and guduchi. These herbs have traditionally been used to support “bala” a Sanskrit word that in modern terminology translates as immune strength. This strength, which keeps us vital and resistant to illness, is the fruit of balanced living. When energy is flowing freely between our environment, senses, body, mind, emotions, and soul, our immune system is awake and responsive.

On a practical level, be sure to wash your hands. If you sense that you are coming down with an illness, stay home, drink plenty of fluids, and take warm baths – both for your own sake and the sake of the community. If you are spending more time inside, use the time to consider how your personal choices influence the ecosystem, and how we can personally and collectively improve the health on our planet by remembering the Vedic expression “Ahum Brahmasmi” – I am the Universe and the Universe is me.

Love,
David
