Functional Medicine and Functional Testing

Functional medicine is an integrative medical approach that aligns with many of the principles of Ayurvedic medicine. You can expect evaluation and treatment not only of symptoms, but underlying imbalances and the root cause of illness; the importance of food, nutrients and digestive functioning; and treatment of the unique individual from a mind-body-spirit perspective.

Practitioners trained in functional medicine and Ayurveda understand that while traditional laboratory tests may be within normal range, subtle imbalances may still exist, resulting in functional changes that occur long before a diagnosable disease manifests.

Functional medicine testing allows the doctor to go one step further to determine the current functioning of your body’s system. This offers an opportunity to correct imbalances, detect early symptoms of disease, and optimize the body’s functioning to resolve most common health complaints at the causal level and remove barriers to good health.

Functional medicine testing can be used to identify:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Digestive, absorptive, and metabolic dysfunction
  • Toxic exposures and ability to detoxify
  • Inflammatory responses and triggers
  • Imbalances in neurotransmitter metabolites and amino acid precursors
  • Hormonal imbalances—adrenal and thyroid functioning
  • Disturbances of the gut microbiome
  • Genetic susceptibilities such as methylation (MTHFR) and detoxification issues

Most imbalances in functionality can be addressed through a comprehensive approach to treatment, some can be completely restored to optimum function, and others can be substantially improved. Based on your results, your personalized recommendations may include guidance on proper diet, nutritional and botanical supplements, detoxification support, and mind-body techniques.

Functional testing is ordered as part of a medical consultation. Fees for testing are an additional charge and are paid directly to the laboratories. Follow-up consultations to review laboratory findings and provide further personalized recommendations incur charges at $195 per half-hour.
