Chopra Center History

The Genesis

Formerly Chief of Staff at Boston Regional Medical Center, Dr. Chopra built a successful endocrinology practice in the 1980's. His teaching affiliations included Tufts University and Boston University Schools of Medicine. It was then that Dr. Chopra realized the potential in Western medicine for the establishment of a new life-giving paradigm, one that encompassed the fundamental principle that perfect health is more than just the absence of disease. He began to envision a medical system based upon the premise that health is a lively state of balance and integration of body, mind and spirit. Dr. Chopra began melding Western medicine with modern theories of quantum physics and the timeless wisdom of ancient cultures. Today Dr. Chopra is known worldwide for his published works including 35 books and more than 100 audio, video and CD-ROM titles published on every continent, and in dozens of languages.

A Dream Fulfilled

Dr. Chopra teamed up with Dr. David Simon, a renowned Ayurvedic physician and board-certified neurologist, in founding the first Chopra Center for Wellbeing in La Jolla, California in 1996. The Center fulfilled both doctors’ dream of creating a place that focused on enhancing health and nourishing the human spirit. The Center offered a wide variety of individual and group programs in bodymindspirit medicine and personal development, integrating the best of Western medicine and natural Ayurvedic healing traditions to provide an innovative approach to health and the fulfillment of human potential.

A New Beginning

In May 2002, Drs. Chopra and Simon moved The Chopra Center for Wellbeing to the La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, to provide a full retreat with exceptional accommodations and beautiful grounds for relaxation and meditation. Chopra Center guests also enjoy golf, tennis and Chopra Center cuisine at restaurants on the La Costa campus. Dr. Simon took the role of The Chopra Center’s medical director and CEO in 2004.

Other Chopra Center Locations

The Chopra Center will be expanding its presence nationally and internationally by opening sister Chopra Center & Spas, that will offer Ayurvedic body treatments, Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga and Primordial Sound Meditation instruction. In addition, Drs. Chopra and Simon will tour the centers, teaching a selection of the seminars taught at the main Center at La Costa Resort & Spa.
